Since 1995, the artist collective Futurefarmers (Amy Franceschini and Michael Swaine) has been supporting participatory work that brings together artists, designers, scientists and farmers in playful explorations of social and environmental issues. Emerging from the group’s research for a site-specific project in Santa Fe entitled Forging a Nail, the essays and interviews in this publication explore New Mexico’s complex nuclear history as it relates to land use, resource extraction and the breadth of decisions that were made within the Manhattan Project.
